Stay Organised, How to Organise Digital Files the Easy Way

Folder and File Structure

Stay organised as you progress through you work you amount a huge amount of files , clients, personal projects , web site, stock photography, blog and downloads there are loads of digital files these days there are no easy ways but to create a system.

Let look at each of them in independently: You want to be able to open up and go straight to the right file and not have to open up loads file to find the right one. This will also help out while working on composing your art work as each file indicates what it’s for what it has and access then for other parts of the project if applicable.
Naming Files:

  • * Adios_logo_v4.psd
  • * Adios_logo_final.psd
  • * Adios_poster_background.psd
  • * Adios_poster_center.psd
  • * Adios_poster_text.txt
  • * Adios_poster_v3.ind
  • * Adios_poster_v3.pdf
  • * Adios_poster_final_printers.pdf

Those are some examples off file naming for your projects, just by glancing I can see that they are for without needing to open them up. The same goes to Photoshop and Illustrators layers naming then will make it easier to find what you’re looking for in no time.

Naming Folders:

Let’s look at a Folder structure as you can see listed below you can see a filing system for client Adios, this all depends on the complexity, it might have.
Client: ADIOS
Clients Name > Project > Sub folders and files

Client Adios – Project folders

  • * Logo
  • * Stationery
  • * Poster
  • * Website

Personal Projects
Personal projects would have same structure as you clients with added folders or files that you might need here is an example:
Projects: Dream Poster

  • * Research and Development, (Notes, References, Ideas, brainstorming etc.)
  • * Stock photography
  • * Text
  • * Photoshop
  • * Vector
  • * InDesign

Each project will have different needs, some more then others, this gives an idea on how to structure them.
The title says it all, your work resources here some example

  • * Fonts
  • * Graphic Stock
  • * Patterns & Gradients
  • * Stock Images
  • * Swatches
  • * Template
  • * Web icons
  • * WordPress Themes

There is a couple of ways to approach this, one add as a project and it be categorised as website, but I have made a folder for its own as its going to get larger as time goes on.

Chris San-Claire Blog

  • * Site Images
  • * Document
  • * Posts
  • * Pages
  • * Portfolio
  • * Photography
  • * Graphic Design
  • * Research and Development

This all came to me when I had loads of files all over my desktop and duplicating files, I’m sure this is not be the perfect solution or suit everybody’s work requirements or need but its a starting point.
